Joan M. Hagan's commitment to her
community and her history of service to the
Community YMCA of Eastern Delaware County
make her eminently qualified to receive this
year’s Community YMCA’s Spirit, Mind, and
Body Award. Joan was born and raised in
Media, attended Nativity BVM and Cardinal
O’Hara High School, and received her BA from
Rosemont College. She did graduate work in
Pastoral Counseling at Neumann College and
received her Diploma in Mortuary Studies
from AAM Institute in New York City. Joan is
a licensed Funeral Director/Supervisor with
Toppitzer Funeral Home at Arlington Cemetery
and also works with her brother at Rigby
Harting & Hagan Funeral Home in Media.
Joan's commitment to her community
covers a wide range of organizations and
activities. She has served as member and
then President of the Media Borough
Council from 1981 to 2005, and under her
leadership, Media grew to become one of
Delaware County's models of positive
economic development. Joan has also served
many other community organizations as board
member and President, including the Girl
Scouts of Delaware County, The Media
Fellowship House, and Friends of the Media
Library. She has been active in her church
as former parish council member, Eucharistic
Minister and musician. Currently Joan serves
as the chair of the Holy Family Home
Advisory Board, as a member of Association
Jeanne Jugan, as a volunteer for the Media
Library, and as a Committee-person.
In recognition of her distinguished
record of community service, Joan has
received numerous awards. She was recognized
as a Delaware County 'Woman of Achievement'
by the Women’s Commission, received the
Community Service Award from both the Media
Fellowship House and the Ethel Mason Day
Care Center, is a member of the National
Honor Society of Funeral Directors, Mu Sigma
Alpha and was named a recipient of the
Spirit of Jeanne Jugan Award in October.
Joan's history of volunteer service
at the Community Y has included membership
on the Corporate Board as well as serving as
its Chair, member of the program committee,
International Bazaar Committee and Healthy
Kids Volunteer. Joan has also served as a
member of the Foundation Board and Heritage
Foundation. Joan’s commitment to the Y stems
from the long-term bonds of the Toppitzer
Funeral Home to the Y. From George C.
Toppitzer’s role as a founding member
through Catherine’s ongoing sponsorships,
Joan and her brother value the Y as an
integral part of the Eastern Delaware County
Community. Joan has previously been
recognized as a Volunteer of the Year for
the Community Y. It is altogether fitting
that her lifetime of service to her
community and the YMCA be honored with the
Community YMCA’s Spirit, Mind, and Body
Award. |
