Our Mission
The Community YMCA of Eastern Delaware County is a charitable association founded on Christian principles, dedicated to building a healthy spirit, mind and body. We are committed to being a positive part of family life by promoting the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

Our Vision:
We will be the community leader, the center of activities, a catalyst for change and an organization that positively affects and improves our community.

Our Cause:
At the Y, strengthening community is our cause. Every day, we work side-by-side with our neighbors to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

Who We Are:
The Y is the nation’s leading non-profit committed to strengthening communities through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The first Y was founded in London, England in 1844. Today, Ys are making a difference in over 120 countries around the world, serving an estimated 30 million people every day.

What We Do:
The Y makes accessible the support and opportunities that empower people and communities to learn, grow and thrive. With a focus on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y nurtures the potential of every youth and teen, improves the nation’s health and well-being, and provides opportunities to give back and support neighbors.

How We Do It:
There is no other nonprofit quite like the Y. That’s because in 10,000 neighborhoods across the nation, we have the presence and partnerships to not just promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change.

  • The Y is community centered. For nearly 160 years, we’ve been listening and responding to our communities.
  • The Y brings people together. We connect people of all ages and backgrounds to bridge the gaps in community needs.
  • The Y nurtures potential. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
  • The Y has local presence and national reach. We mobilize local communities to effect lasting, meaningful change.

Our Impact:
The Y is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities. Every day our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for the common good.

Local History
Your neighborhood Y:
The Community YMCA of Delaware County was born out of a strong commitment by local neighbors to better their community. Today, over 60 years after its founding, we continue to be the largest nonprofit organization serving Delaware County. With a full-time staff of 35 and a part-time staff of over 300, assisted by a dedicated and generous group of volunteers, we are committed to nurturing the potential of kids, promoting healthier lifestyles and fostering a sense of social responsibility, all for the benefit of a better community.

How It All Began...
In the summer of 1947, the Community YMCA launched its first program from Room 214 of the Upper Darby Municipal Building. Activities were run in the local schools before the Community YMCA had a home of its own. The Lansdowne YMCA opened its doors in 1948. The pool at the Lansdowne location, the first large pool in the area, was opened in 1965. It attracted a whole new population into the fold by offering swim lessons, a swim team and recreational swimming. The Ridley Area YMCA opened its doors in October 1993.
