Global
The first YMCA was founded in London, England in 1844. Today YMCAs are at work in more than 120 countries around the world, serving an estimated 30 million people.

Your Neighborhood YMCA
The Community YMCA was born out of a commitment by local neighbors to better their community. Today, that commitment to community remains at the forefront of all the Community YMCA stands for and does. Fifty-eight years after its founding, the Community YMCA continues to be the largest human services agency serving Eastern Delaware County. A full-time staff of 50 and part-time staff of 225, assisted by a dedicated group of volunteers, operate the two branch locations.

How It All Began…
The Community YMCA launched its first program in the summer of 1947 from Room 214 at the Upper Darby Municipal Building. Activities were run in the local schools before the Community YMCA had a home of its own. The Lansdowne YMCA opened in 1948. The pool at the Lansdowne location, the first large pool in the area, was opened in 1965. It attracted a whole new population into the fold by offering swim lessons, a swim team and recreational swimming. The Ridley Area YMCA opened its doors in October 1993.
